Nyeri

The two varieties that make Kenyan coffee taste like Kenyan coffee were selected in a government laboratory in the 1930s, and named after it.

Blackcurrant, grapefruit and tomato-leaf savouriness over a juicy, almost wine-like acidity. The most intense acidity in commercial coffee.

Grown at 1'600–2'000 m above sea level.

What makes it different

Kenya is the most systematically organised coffee origin in the world. Smallholders deliver cherry to cooperative wet mills called factories, coffee is graded by screen size, cupped, and sold at open auction in Nairobi — a chain of institutions that has been pushing quality upward for the better part of a century.

Compared with Yirgacheffe

Both are washed East African coffees at high altitude, and both are held up as benchmarks — but they are opposites in character. Yirgacheffe is floral, delicate and perfumed; Nyeri is savoury, blackcurranty and forceful. Ethiopia seduces, Kenya announces.

How this place shapes the taste

  1. Variety: SL28 and SL34, with Ruiru 11 and Batian planted for disease resistance

    The decisive factor. SL28's blackcurrant character is genetic, not environmental, which is why producers elsewhere plant it hoping for Kenyan flavour. Ruiru 11 and Batian resist coffee berry disease and are increasingly common — hardier, and generally accepted to cup a step below.

  2. Processing: Washed with an extended, often double, fermentation and soaking under clean water

    The famous Kenyan technique, and the second half of the answer. Long fermentation followed by soaking strips the coffee to absolute clarity and sharpens acidity further. It is also why Kenyan coffee can taste almost aggressive — nothing is left to soften it.

  3. Soil: Deep red volcanic soils on the slopes below Mount Kenya, high in phosphorus

    Widely credited with the acid intensity — the soils around Nyeri are notably acidic and mineral-rich, and the same varieties grown on different ground do not produce the same brightness.

  4. Altitude: 1,600–2,000 m

    High and cool, so ripening is slow and beans are dense. Density plus fermentation technique plus SL28 genetics is a stack of three acidity-building factors, none of them cancelling the others out.

  5. Rain & humidity: Two rainy seasons, so two harvests — a main crop and a smaller fly crop

    The main crop from October is the one buyers chase. It also means Kenya, like Colombia, can supply for much of the year rather than in one burst.

SL28 and SL34, Scott Agricultural Laboratories, 1930s

At Scott Agricultural Laboratories outside Nairobi, researchers screened coffee varieties for drought tolerance and yield and gave the selections plain catalogue numbers. Two of them, SL28 and SL34, turned out to produce a cup unlike anything else being grown — the blackcurrant intensity that now defines Kenyan coffee. They were never bred for flavour; that was a byproduct nobody was looking for. SL28 in particular is now planted in a dozen countries by producers chasing what Nyeri does naturally, and it rarely travels well.

Brewing it

The most acid-forward coffee here, so the whole job is building enough sweetness to balance it. Slightly finer, slightly hotter, and do not cut the brew short. Kenyan coffee brewed timidly tastes like sour fruit juice; brewed properly it tastes like blackcurrant.
